As a Ukrainian-born American, the past few months leave me inevitably thinking about the courage of those who are living in Ukraine. In the last 90 days, thousands of Ukrainian soldiers have laid down their lives in defense of freedom. They died fighting a tyrannical government that is threatening to steal a basic, God-given, human right.
The outrage expressed by many in the media over the archbishop’s decision demonstrates once again how disconnected most Americans are from basic Christian teachings on ecclesial authority.
But the true meaning of Memorial Day tends to get lost — the willingness of men and women to answer our nation’s call, knowing the risks they face, willing to give their lives to protect and defend the country they love.
One day, an orphanage worker begged a fellow volunteer to take a very sick baby girl home. Miraculously, within four months of living with her, the baby was completely healthy. All she needed was to be held while she drank her bottle. You see, the pneumonia these babies suffered from wasn’t caused by a nasty cold. It was caused by damage to their lungs from drinking out of propped-up bottles.
What in the world is going on? In short, our nation has rejected God and we are reaping the whirlwind.
Our Father has given us a cage to keep us from the enticement of sin. God forbid that we should ever gaze at the sinful pleasures of this world and long to be free from the confines of a life of cross-carrying and self-denial.
I want to offer you five tips on what it means to occupy on this earth, to wait with anticipation for Christ’s return, and also to engage in the race of life.
